In the twilight of the 20th century, the town was home to Nelson and Colne College, which consolidated operations onto the grounds of nearby Barrowford. This was accompanied by a 'new school' on the Barrowford Road.


The aforementioned list of Best Places to Live in the UK also includes Altrincham and Prestwich. These three towns are not as flashy or as affluent as their neighbours but they do have a lot going for them.

It was once a medieval farm and the place where Sir Roger Bannister became the first man to run a four-minute mile.
