So you've had your dog or cat for a while, and your life is changing, and now you think you need to get rid of your pet. But are you sure this is what you want to do? Getting rid of your pet is a very drastic measure. If you leave your pet in a shelter, you may think that it will soon find a new home. But it is unlikely. Many high-slaughter shelters must euthanize the animals every day to make room for newcomers. Some สัตว์น่าเลี้ยง for four or five days before their luck runs out. Fifty-six percent of the dogs and seventy-six percent of the cats in shelters are euthanized ... many of them healthy, well-behaved animals whose owners simply no longer had time for them. Even in a deathless shelter, your pet may be doomed to live the rest of its life in a small cage if it is not chosen for adoption.
If you are willing to try keeping your pet, there are many things you can do. Let's look at some of the most common reasons why people get rid of their pets and how to avoid them.
Reason 1: I'm moving.
Solution: Bring your pet! A quick Google search for "pet friendly homes" will show you many different directories of pet friendly rental homes. Here are just a few I found: People with Pets, Pets Welcome, My New Place, Pets911, Pet Home, and Dog House Properties. And pet-friendly housing isn't just limited to those places! Many apartment buildings and complexes allow pets. You may have to pay an additional security deposit. But in the end, it will be worth it, having your pet with you!
Here's something else you need to know. If things get really bad and you don't have a place to live, you may not have to give up your pet yet. Pets Of The Homeless is a website that works to help the homeless maintain their pets or find temporary homes for their pets until they recover.
Reason 2: I can no longer afford my pets.
Solution: Call your local animal shelter or food pantry and ask about pet food banks. They exist and are becoming more common! You can even make your own dog food, which can be cheaper in the long run. (Not hard! Dogs can eat almost the same as us!) Your local animal shelter, or vet, can also tell you about free or low-cost vet care for your pets.
Reason 3: My new boyfriend / girlfriend / fiancé / roommate doesn't like pets.
Solution: Are you really going to euthanize your pet on someone else's whim? Are you sure you want to date someone or live with someone who doesn't like pets? That's a pretty big lifestyle change for someone else. If you are sure you want to stay with this person, make a compromise. Perhaps your pet may be denied access to certain areas of the house, such as the bedroom or kitchen.
Reason 4: My new boyfriend / girlfriend / fiancé / roommate is allergic to my pet.
Solution: As long as the person's allergy is not life-threatening, there are many things you can do to greatly reduce allergens in your pet. Keeping your home clean is a giant step. Dust and vacuum frequently, and use a HEPA filter vacuum if possible. You can buy an air filter for your home that sucks allergens out of the air. A company called AllerPet makes a special liquid that you can clean your pet with regularly to remove allergens. Spraying flax seeds on your pet's food can also reduce the amount of dander it produces. The person may even be willing to take allergy medicine! After all, many people have seasonal allergies and take medications regularly. They don't just get rid of the stations!
Reason 5: We are having a baby.
Solution: Pets and children are a great combination! Most pets are perfectly fine with children, although at first they may be a bit confused by the new arrival. You should always supervise your pet around young children. When your child is a baby, she probably won't be unsupervised anyway, right? As your child grows, you will need to teach her to be kind to pets. Don't let your child pull on your pet's tail, poke it, pick it up, etc. Many people feel that a pet must be forced to put up with whatever their child does. But that's not good for anyone involved!
