Grateful, are you laughing with me?
Thanksgiving is a time for family, food and traditions. Some people expect action-packed football games, grandma’s delicious turkey and attire, or hanging out with friends and family. Conversations fill with laughter and gratitude.
It’s hard to be grateful when things don’t go the way you imagined. When rebuilding a house, setbacks occur. David and Christine had remodeled their kitchen and master suite for over 6 months. They wanted their house วงการฟุตบอลวิกฤต by Thanksgiving; unfortunately it did not happen. Remodeling was very stressful even with the best plans.
In the case of David and Christine, it was human error that put them behind. When their cabinets arrived, they had the wrong color. David and Christine considered making the cabinets work, but in the end, it just wasn't what they imagined.
As you know, there are deadlines within construction projects. When deadlines are not met, the whole project is affected and sometimes delayed. This was the case for David and Christine. They had to reorganize the cabinets and wait 8 weeks for the new cabinets to arrive. Two days before the new freezers arrived, there was a snowstorm. A storm from the century dumped 4-5 meters of snow over their region. The blizzard closed highways and roads down, power outages lasted for up to 10 days, and contractors could not meet their deadlines. What a mess!
Therefore, David and Christine knew that they would in no way end their remodeling project at Thanksgiving. This was very disappointing and hard for them to appreciate the essence of Thanksgiving.
Maybe you have encountered a setback and are unable to hold Thanksgiving or other holiday gathering in your home. Do not worry. The following three simple and helpful suggestions can help you enjoy the day despite the delay.
1. Get an adjustment; an attitude adjustment. Start by looking for the positive. Notice what is good; what is complete and what is on the right track. I know it can be challenging to do when you are frustrated and disappointed. Nevertheless, you are empowered to deal with disappointment by changing your perspective. You can not change others or the situation sometimes, but you can change yourself, your attitude and perspective.
2. Accept what is. Kathleen Casey Theisen says convincingly: "Acceptance is not submission; it is an acknowledgment of facts in a situation. Then you decide what you want to do about it."
Acceptance is the key when moving from total defeat to peace. Accepting what is (project not done by Thanksgiving) releases tension, anxiety and worry. You do not like what happened; just accept it and move on.
Reward yourself. Do something nice for yourself in the middle of the mess. It does not have to be expensive to make a difference.
· Buy something new. For David and Christine, getting new kitchen towels and dishcloths was as simple as getting one.
· Bring friends and family with you and you will have a drink.
· If your kitchen can not be used, do your best. Put one of your lovely tablecloths on the floor and take a Thanksgiving picnic.
